"Thy Way Not Mine" Lyrics & Song

After church on Sunday a couple people asked me where to find the hymn lyrics I quoted in my sermon. They were originally written by Horatius Bonar, who was a Scottish pastor and hymn writer. At one point he lost 5 children in succession but he never lost his faith in the Lord. Read and let his words encourage you. You can also listen to a new version of the hymn arranged by Sovereign Grace Music

VERSE 1
Thy way, not mine, O Lord
However dark it be
Lead me by Thine own hand
Choose out the path for me, for me

VERSE 2
Smooth let it be or rough
It will still be the best
Winding or straight, it leads
Right onward to Thy rest

CHORUS 1

I dare not choose my lot
I would not, if I might
Choose Thou for me, my God
So I can walk aright

VERSE 3
Take Thou my cup, and it
With joy or sorrow fill
As best to Thee may seem
Choose Thou my good and ill

CHORUS 2
Not mine, not mine the choice
In all things great or small
Be Thou my guide, my strength
My wisdom and my all, my wisdom and my all

A wonderful complement to this hymn is a prayer from John Wesley:

“I am no longer my own, but yours. Put me to what you will, rank me with whom you will; put me to doing, put me to suffering; let me be employed for you or laid aside for you, exalted for you or brought low for you; let me full, let me be empty, let have all things, let me have nothing; I freely and wholeheartedly yield all things to your pleasure and disposal.”
