Praying "Thy Kingdom Come" Together
Last Sunday we had a time of missional prayer as a church in response to the phrase "Thy kingdom come" in the Lord's prayer. But we want to keep praying these prayers not just on Sunday but individually and during the week. I've found it helpful when there are specific prayers I have for gospel advance so here are a list of places we long to see God's kingdom come.
But first, some fuel for our fire. Paul prays for gospel advance this way in Colossians 4:
Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison—that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak." (Col 4:2-4) (ESV) I love this prayer. Paul encourages us to "continue steadfastly" in prayer--which is a reminder that we all need. Then Paul asks God to open a door for the gospel to be proclaimed--he asks God to do what only he can do. Then Paul even asks for prayer for himself--that he'd be clear and helpful in his proclamation.
So here are some specific "Thy kingdom come" prayer areas for us:
Pray for the students in our church: Ask that God would open their hearts to the gospel and grow in their faith
Pray for gospel opportunities in the lives of our church members: Ask that God would open up conversations and relationships with people who don't know Jesus to declare the gospel.
Pray for those God draws to our church: Ask that we would be faithful to introduce people to Jesus and help them grow in their faith. Ask that we would have wisdom about how to handle future growth so we can make room for those God is bringing to our church.
Pray for a future church plant in El Paso: We want to be used by God to plant another church in the El Paso area. Ask that God would give us what we need to establish a church in a new area for the advancement of the gospel. Continue to pray for Vince Corpus as he is evaluated as a potential church planter.
Pray for gospel work done by our ministry partners: Ask that God would use them powerfully in their different areas:
- Rescue Mission: Ministry to homeless, those in recovery, and low-income families
- Pregnancy and Fatherhood Help Services: Ministry to women and men dealing with unplanned pregnancies
- Rancho 3M: Children's home and school in Guadalupe, Mexico
- Charlie's Lunch: Ministry to children in undernourished and impoverished areas worldwide
